[upper inscription damaged] "Here rests an old man, full of days, 80 years old he was at his death, prominent in Torah, Fear of the Lord was his treasure. In his soul he loved the Torah and study of the Lord – in surety and in perfection, the esteemed man, our teacher Reb Naphtali Hertz, son of Reb Yehoshua of blessed memory, Nejmark (Neumark, Nemark). [...] He died Friday, the eve of the Holy Sabbath, 20th Tevet 5654 [1894]. May his soul be bound in the bond of everlasting life." Translated by Heidi M. Szpek, Ph.D. (szpekh@cwu.edu), Associate Professor of Religious Studies, Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Central Washington University, Ellensburg, WA 98926
